The Washington Monument

2012-12-15

The Washington Monument in Washington DC is over 125 years old. It is 555 feet (169 meters) tall and it was one of the first places I visited when I moved to DC.

It is made of stone and when a 5.8 magnitude earthquake hit Virginia in August, 2011, the monument was badly damaged. Many stones were cracked. Since the earthquake, it has been closed to the public.

I'm very glad I visited the monument in July when it was still open, because it could be closed until 2014. When I visited the monument, an elevator took me to the top. The view was spectacular. I took some pictures of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, which was under repair at the time.
