Halloween in Japan

2014-11-05

My first ever Halloween party happened in Japan. I am Australian, and growing up, we never did anything Halloween related. There were no trick or treaters, no dressing up and no Galloween parties.

When I first moved to Japan Halloween was not so popular but I was living in an international dorm so my first year here there was a halloween party and I also dressed up for some of my kids english teaching work commitments as a witch.

Over the years, with me living in Japan, Halloween has gained more and more popularity along with other western traditions such as Christmas, Valentines`s Day etc (Easter however is still relatively unknown here). Even though I didn`t grow up with Halloween I find it fun for my children and since my first child was born we have participated in Halloween festivities each year.

Last weekend we spent time with other international families celebrating Halloween. All of the children dressed up, we had a pot-luck style lunch at an American friend`s house and did trick or treating with each other at a local park. My children loved dressing up and doing trick or treating. In the lead up to the event we read a lot of Halloween themed books and talked about Trick or treating. I am glad, even though I am not American, that I can share different traditions with my children.

Do you celebrate Halloween? This year, did you have any trick or treaters?
