サウジアラビアの英語教育

English is actually taught rather inefficiently, with just the rules given to the student and the teacher doing most of the talking. At schools students are expected to learn by rote, which means to memorize word lists, rather than to understand how all those words fit together.

There are a number of English schools which try and correct this approach by using the standard course books which are on the market. In this case, much depends on the teaching philosophy of each teacher.

Studying on-line has not yet become popular in Saudi Arabia. Students tend to rely quite heavily on private tuition, which does not always provide the same dynamic as a well-organized and lively class. In the business sphere at least, the focus seems to be on IELTS, which the students have to score well on in order to be able to study in foreign universities and colleges or work in British companies.

Saudi students have very little inhibition when it comes to speaking and are quite communicative, despite the frequency of poorly constructed sentences. However, they pay little attention to the grammar and the word order, which sometimes makes their language difficult for foreigners to understand.
