My husband I don’t exchange birthday presents anymore. Since we are in our 50s, we prefer to use our money for traveling and short escapes. Recently we celebrate my 58th birthday by spending four days on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, and at Virginia Beach.

The first day we enjoyed a leisurely drive to Onancock, Virginia. It is a beautiful little town near the Chesapeake Bay.

The next day we got up early and road in a Fun Ride. Fun Rides is popular cycling events that often raises money for a charity. We rode 40 miles on our tandem bicycle. There was a fall snap in the air, and the leaves were so beautifull on the country lanes. They had water breaks and a lunch break at two lovely old farms.

After the ride we drove down to Virginia Beach, crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. For two nights we have an oceanfront room at a big hotel. Each morning we woke up and watched the sunset from our balcony. We tried some new restaurants, took time to relax and read, and walked and rode our bike on the beach. We rarely looked at the clock, because time didn’t matter!

For me, the best vacations combine cycling or water sports, naps, reading, trying new restaurants and exploring new parts of the country. It was such an enjoyable birthday getaway!
