A cultural weekend

2012-12-21

Recently, I have been sitting in my living room on a Sunday evening thinking, 'Where did the weekend go?!' so, this Saturday, I decided that I would do something interesting with my family.

We went to The National Museum of Welsh Life for the day. This is like a normal museum where there are exhibits inside glass cases, but there is also an outside part where they rebuilt historical buildings from all over the country. It tells the story of life in Wales over the centuries, the culture and traditions that are special to us.

You can walk from around a 1000-year-old Chapel, a Tudor Mansion and a 250-year-old farmhouse - with all the furniture and decorations that they would have had. They have guides to explain the history and the families that lived in the buildings. They had real fired burning in the fireplaces, just what we wanted today as it was sunny but very cold!

My nephews loved the Victorian village; it had an old-fashioned sweetshop and an old school house for them to explore. I bought some lovely banana fudge and a traditional welsh cake called 'Bara Brith'. There was a very good playground there for the boys the run around in and then at lunchtime, we had picnic with flasks of hot tea.

A display of Welsh ‘Love Spoons’ A traditional gift that a man would carve and give to the woman he wants to marry. The different shapes have different meanings so the real relationship can be represented. For example, a key means that he is promising to care for the woman always.

It was lots of fun and I think that we should do more things like this. There are other parts of the National Museum around the country; about an hour away is the Roman History exhibit at Caerleon, which is the best preserved Roman site in Britain, that's the next one on the list.

I recommend a cultural weekend to make you feel as if you did something with your weekend!
