UK National Days

2013-03-04

Hi MailPaL student,

Here is a little information about the national days of the UK.

1st March: St David's Day

His flag looks like this - He is the patron saint of Wales, famous for being a symbol of independance and living a simple life. We celebrate by wearing national dress, wearing leeks or daffodils - the symbols of Wales - and eating welsh foods such as Lava Bread (made from seaweed) and Tiesen Lap (which is a fruit cake).

17th March: St Patrick's Day

He is the patron saint of Ireland and is probably the most famous internationally, as it is also a big holiday in America. He is the man who brought Christianity to Ireland. They celebrate with traditional foods and festivals as well as lots of Guiness!

23rd April: St George's Day

The patron saint of England, who is famous for defeating a dragon. This is the smallest of the national holidays of the UK, with the flags being flown and traditional hymns, such as 'Jerusalem' sung in churches, but no large parties.

30th November: St Andrew's Day

He is the patron saint of Scotland, who was the brother of one of the disciples of Jesus and appeared ina vision before a Scottish battle with the English and inspired them to win. The day is also celebrated with traditional foods and festivals.

Note: If you put the flags of St George, St Andrew and St Patrick together, you make the Union Jack - the UK flag. Sadly, Wales is not included as it is not a kingdom, but a principality. This means that when we were independent, we did not have a King but a Prince.
