Christmas Cookie Swap

I was writing to one of my students recently about Holiday Cookie Swaps or Christmas Cookie Exchanges. I began to wonder if this is done in Japan, too? Or something similar?

If you are the hostess for a cookie swap, you invite as many friends as you want over to your home. Everyone bakes several dozen cookies (the same kind), usually one dozen for each person at the cookie exchange.

During the party, everyone gets to chat and enjoy visiting. And at the end, you split up the cookies so everyone goes home with many different kinds! It is a fun way to have lots of holiday treats, but only having to bake one kind.

Here is a link with some pictures of the many different kinds of cookies that you will see at a Christmas Cookie Swap:

Sometimes people will also do this at work, but without the party. You bring your cookies, split them all up, then after work you go home with many kinds of cookies. Excellent for busy women (or men!) who don’t want to bake 10 kinds of cookies!
