The important legacy from the Olympics last year

2013-07-24

The important legacy from the Olympics last year, was that there would be a long-lasting affect on sport in the UK. It seems to have worked! In the last month all these things have happened:

• British and Irish Lions team have won the Rugby tour of Australia for the first time since 1997. This is a Rugby tournament that happens every four years between Australia, New Zealand and South Africa against a team from all four countries of the UK - England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. It is very competitive with both sides wanting to win. The British team was made up of mostly Welsh players as they are the best players at the moment. (I am Welsh and this makes me very proud).

• Andy Murray has won Wimbledon - the first British man to do so in 77 years. The last match was very stressful for everyone watching and the shout of the crowd was heard miles away when he finally won. Andy was so excited that, when he climbed up to hug his family, he forgot his mum! He had to go back up and say sorry to her...

• Chris Froome won the Tour de France, the second Britain ever to do it - the first was Bradley Wiggens last year.

• At the moment, England is winning 2-0 in the famous Ashes cricket series. Again, this is against Australia. We love nothing more than playing sport against Australia and it is always a serious battle. This tournament has happened every 2 years since 1882.

We have the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next year, I hope we do well in them as well. This is a competition between countries that used to be part of the British Empire, such as Australia, Canada, India, South Africa and many more countries. It is important to be active as there is an obesity crisis in the UK at the moment - there are too many overweight people and it is causing many problems for our health service. The message from the Olympics is that sport is fun and that we CAN do it!

P.S. I would just like to say that I feel a little sorry for Chris Froome; his great win has been overshadowed by the news that the Princess of Cambridge has given birth to a baby boy - the future King of England. Congratulations to Kate and Wills!
