Dengue fever

2014-09-05

The recent news of a dengue fever outbreak in Tokyo is a cause for concern especially since there has not been a case confirmed in Japan for 70 or so years. So far, everyone who has contacted the disease is listed in a stable condition. I hope that it continues this way.

Questions:

1. Why do you think there has been an outbreak in Japan this year?

2. What can you do to help protect yourself against the disease? Of course, if visiting Yoyogi Park area it is recommended to wear long sleeves and long pants but do you think this will be enough to stop the spread of this disease?

3. Some sources believe that climate change (sometimes called global warming) is the reason the spread of tropical diseases, such as dengue fever is on the rise. Do you think this is related?

4. Had you heard of dengue fever before this past week? There is no vaccine for this disease. Do you think they should be trying to create one?
