‘Stone Cold’

2013-10-26

I have recently finished reading the novel ‘Stone Cold’ by Robert Swindells. It is a book I am teaching my Year 9 students at a secondary school in England.

The students are learning about homelessness. The story is written in dual narrative, which means that there are two characters’ voices throughout the story and the readers get insight into two people’s lives. Link, a young boy living on the streets, is struggling with homelessness and he is feeling isolated. While Shelter, an older man who has served in the military, is disgusted by homelessness and thinks he is doing the world a favour by getting rid of homeless people.

The novel is hard-hitting and completely different from anything I have ever read before.
