1st Month in Japan – What an experience!

2010-08-02

When I came to Japan the first time, I knew only two words – “Ohayo-gozaimasu” and “Wakarimasu.” I could say “Wakarimasu,” but I did not understand any words a native Japanese person said. People spoke too fast, and I didn’t have the vocabulary.

I made MANY mistakes in my first few months in Japan. I left the train ticket “kippu” in the train machine. I did not take it out when I walked through the machine because in the U.S. we leave it as we enter the first station. I did not understand there were different trains – express, local, semi-express. I often missed my train stop because I was on the wrong train. I wore the ‘toilet slippers’ around my host family’s home and outdoor shoes on the ‘tatami.’

People in Japan are so kind! They helped me every day to learn the correct way to do and say things. I am still learning Japanese language and culture. It is fun but also challenging - especially ‘kanji’ is not easy for foreigners.

Don’t give up trying to learning a language or visiting/living in another country because you can’t understand! It may be difficult, but we learn by our mistakes. I hope you try!
