世界で英語はどのように教えられているの?

How is English taught in where you live now?

English is the native (first) language of the United States, so it is spoken and written everywhere. Therefore, people learn in a variety of ways - through the environment (surrounding living area), formal studying, listening to music or watching movies, talking with friends, etc. Because the United States is a large country, there are 13 dialects of English spoken here. People in New York City do not pronounce words or use the same vocabulary as do people from Texas. This is similar to people living in Tokyo using a different accent or vocabulary from those people living in Hokkaido or Kyushu.

For formal studying, the United States education system believes in a 4-skill learning (reading, writing, speaking and listening). Students will study all areas of English - speaking (pronunciation and public speaking), listening, reading and writing. There are classes in speech, public speaking, grammar, writing and reading literature. Students also learn by studying through group projects as well as individual lessons or exercises.

In the past, grammar was an area that was highly emphasized by teachers. Now, teachers focus on many skills in different ways. Because the United States is very diverse, there are many people whose first language is not English. So, now, there are English as a Second Language classes in every school for students who need more help. You can also find lots of community and work English programs for adults.

What do you think is the good point and weak point of the student in your country?

I believe the best point about American students is that they learn to study individually (by themselves) as well as in groups. They learn to be independent and personally study hard to reach their goals. Yet, they also learn how to work with other students and do a group (team) project. This helps them learn how to work with others in the future.

I believe the weak point of younger American students is the use of some modern technology - cell phone and other 'text' devices. Now, they learn at a young age to write in 'text English' that is not correct. For example, they 'text' on their cell phone - "R u hm?" (Are you home?) Then, they use that English style/spelling in formal writing. They also speak using vocabulary or pronunciation from popular celebrities or music (such as 'Rap'). Some words do not exist in the English language or is not spoken in correct (standard) English.
