A Fun List: Reasons Why You’ve Lived in Japan Too Long

2010-09-06

Recently, I read an article that lists the top 100 things that show if international people (foreigners) have lived in Japan a long time. It was fun to read the list, and I had lived there long enough to agree with all of them. Some of the list included:

1. You (the international person) bow everywhere - even to the telephone when speaking.

2. You show the ‘V’ sign in every picture, smile, and say ‘chee-zu.’

3. You automatically take off your ‘outside shoes’ and then turn them in the direction pointing them to the door when you enter a residence or special place.

4. You stop to put a plastic cover on your umbrella before walking into a store on a rainy day.

5. You can see a vending machine on every street corner – even in a country location where there seems to be no one living nearby. Then, you don’t hesitate to put 1000¥ into the vending machine to buy something.
