Freedom in South Africa

2011-05-18

We are celebrating Freedom Day on the 27th April and that is an important day for all South Africans so the discussion has been on freedom and whether we have attained it or not looking at some of the issues that are still faced by South Africans today. http://mg.co.za/article/2011-04-14-ficksburg-killing-dont-jump-to-conclusions

We will be having our local elections on the 18th May and many newspapers have been discussing elections. http://mg.co.za/article/2011-04-25-da-promises-to-resurrect-ethekwini-metro-police

I think the notion of freedom is a complicated one as Freedom has different meanings for a number of people depending on how we contextualize it but what is important is to remember that freedom is fragile and thus, we should ensure that we keep working on it.

Local elections always create a bit of a controversy in South Africa in that people complain about their local municipalities and how they do not deliver. We have had many protests related to service delivery and the latest one ended with the killing of one of the protesters by the police. This is also linked to the notion of the fragility of freedom and something South Africans should ponder as they celebrate this year’s freedom day.
