Two things in Britain

2011-05-04

Two things have been in the news recently in Britain: the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton and a national referendum on how we vote in elections. It is only the second national referendum in our history, so it is very important.

The marriage is everywhere, on all TV channels, in all the papers, on biscuit tins and plates, posters and bunting. It is crazy but I hope they have a very happy marriage. There are lots of security worries about the wedding - such as terrorism. However, most people are worrying about the British weather! We have been given a public holiday for the wedding and lots of people are having parties, so it is a nice day off work.

The second thing is the change to how we vote - at the moment we vote in what is called first-past-the-post system, the person with the most votes wins. The government wants to change it to a system called Alternative Vote, where it goes in a ranking order - so if you have 4 candidates you put them in order 1-2-3-4. It is supposed to be fairer, but some say it is not democratic. Here is a link to the BBC News website explanation: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-13179772

I think that we should either leave it as it is, first-past-the-post, it is the clearest system, and the problem we should be looking at is the fact that not many people vote in elections anymore. We do not need to change the system but get people involved again.
