English in Mexico

2010-01-27

Living and working in Mexico leads to creating many ways to teach the English language. Recently a group of ladies approached me to set up conversation classes. After giving it some thought and considering that different people like different things and since most everyone enjoys eating and showing off their cooking expertise, I came up with the idea to combine cooking demos with a conversation session.

The idea was very successful and at each session a participant would demonstrate their conversation ability in English by explaining their recipes while also showing how it was done. We had Q&A after each session to help clarify misunderstood cooking steps and we all had an opportunity to sample each other’s cooking.

Speaking English is very important in Mexico. Getting a good job may depend on it. From small children to grownups, use of the English language is an important part of education in a country whose 2nd most important source of income is tourism.
