Driving in Mexico1

2010-04-13

Hi, I recently had to fortune to take a very long drive from Mexico City to the Yucatan Peninsula. The Yucatan Peninsula, in terms of tourism, is a most rich region of the Mexican country.

It is lush in vegetation and natural beauty, abundant in natural resources like oil, and vastly rich in ancient ruin sites. It is in the Yucatan Peninsula that ancient Mayas and Aztecs left most outstanding ruins, and yearly, millions of visitors walk in their steps while visiting these awesome treasures of mankind.

Upon driving away from Mexico City, the first sight was the still active volcano of Popocatepetl. Due to pollution, it is a rare sight while within the city; but, clear skies allowed me to take a most crisp picture of it that day.

First stop along the way were the grounds of “La Venta”, an ancient Toltec ruins site characterized by large stone figures. The Toltecs pre-date the Mayas and Aztec civilizations in Mexico.

Further on, we arrived at Merida, the capital city of the Yucatan State. Merida is a colonial city, not very big, very quiet, and known as the “White City” because its citizens take great pride in keeping its streets clean from trash and debris.

To be continued........
