Drive UP food

2011-06-30

During my recent trip to America, I did something very American that I had never done. I ate at a fast-food restaurant- from inside my car! Not a drive-thru, but a drive-UP. Sometimes it is also called a drive-in. Originally this style of fast food restaurant began over 60 years ago. There are very few of these kinds of fast-food restaurants left in America.

The customers pull their cars into a long line of speaker boxes in a parking lot. Each speaker box connects you to an operator. You speak into the speaker box and then a young girl, (who often was wearing roller skates back in the 1950’s), brings you a tray that clips onto your car window. Your hot fast-food is placed on the tray and you eat your meal in the parking lot inside your car. When you were finished; you push a button and the girl comes and collects your tray.

I think this is a much better way to enjoy fast-food. Taking your time to eat the food slowly and savoring each greasy bite! Nowadays, most people drive away from a drive-thru and then try to eat a cheeseburger while driving their car. I think this is dangerous. I prefer the style and grace of a drive-UP. It makes eating fast-food not so, well-FAST.

Be sure to check out a movie like Grease to see one of these drive-ups/ins in action.
