Weekend Getaways

2012-10-12

In the fall, many people in the States like to take a weekend getaway to pick apples or enjoy the autumn colors.

My husband and I took a weekend getaway from our home in the D.C. Metro area to upstate New York. By car it takes about 8 hours, and the colors of the autumn leaves grew more and more beautiful as we drove north.

While we were in upstate New York we visited the small village of Cambridge.

The King family in Cambridge has a very old wagon. This wagon used to be horse-drawn, and many years ago would deliver freshly baked bread to homes in Cambridge.

Now, very early every Sunday morning, the King family bakes donuts, and serves them hot from the old wagon. They roll the old wagon into their front yard, and everyone lines up on their front walk to wait patiently for this delicious treat!

The crisp fall air is filled with the delectable smell of hot donuts!

Do you enjoy weekend getaways as much as I do? Or do you prefer a longer vacation? What are popular getaways in Japan? Tell me, I would love to hear your opinions! Enjoy the cooler weather, Susan

Great vocabulary to know!

a weekend getaway-to take a mini-vacation of just two or three days. Many people do this when there is a holiday attached to the weekend.

upstate New York-most people think of New York City when they hear someone say “New York”. But New York is a huge state, with many wonderful places to live and visit, so often people will refer to northern areas outside of The Big Apple as “upstate New York”.
