The London 2012 Summer Olympics

2012-08-07

At the moment, Olympic fever is very high in Britain: London is hosting the Olympic Games for the 3rd time in a 104 years - the only city to have this record. There are flags everywhere, t-shirts, cups and key-rings with the Olympic logo in every shop and nearly every advert on the TV is linked to the Games. We really want to show our best side to the world - especially after that amazing Opening ceremony in Beijing 4 years ago.

In the UK, there is proud history of sport, many of the world\'s most popular sports were invented here - sadly, this does not mean that we are always very good at them! We have high hopes that our team will do well in swimming, cycling and sailing. As is traditional, the British Sports Minister has a bet with the Australian Sports Minister as to which country will win the most medals. We have not won as many as we had hoped in the first few days but there is still time. So far, I have been impressed by how well Japan is doing in the swimming and how many teenagers are winning medals...

We have had a lot of information on the members of \"Team GB\" with interviews and special adverts for each of them, so we know their story. These Games come at a time of economic problems; so a large part of the marketing of the Olympics here, has been to emphasise the legacy of the Games - that the sports facilities will be used for years to come and will inspire future generations of athletes. Also, it is not just the \'London\' Games - it is for the whole of the UK. Events are taking place in Weymouth, Cardiff and Edinburgh. I live in Cardiff and it is amazing to see all the different people visiting my city. The atmosphere is very happy and friendly even though security is very strict.

At first, many people were not sure about the Opening Ceremony; the \'playing cricket on the village green\' stereotype of England was a little worrying. However, the quick tour of British history with Shakespeare and JK Rowling (author of the Harry Potter books); industry and music; the NHS, the internet and Mr. Bean; was fantastic. Not to mention the Queen herself taking to James Bond! My mother could not believe it was really her! I think that the Opening ceremony showed our character brilliantly, we are a nation that is creative, cultured but a little bit strange – welcome to London!
