Spring Forward, Fall Back

2012-12-07

Recently most parts of the United States finished Daylight Savings Time. At 0200 on a specified Sunday, the clocks roll back an hour.

Daylight Savings time begins each spring, and then “goes backwards” in the fall. It is a way of giving more daylight in the spring and summer.

Everyone always has a hard time remember which way the clock goes, forward or backwards. People are sometimes even late or early to work because of this! So there is a little phrase to help us remember:

Spring forward, fall back.

Spring means the season and also is another word for “jump”.

Fall is the season and also has another meaning. In the spring we “jump” forward by one hour. In the autumn we “fall” back an hour.

There is a special race in some parts of the country to celebrate the yearly time change. It is called “The Anything is Possible!” race.

Runners begin running at 0150 on the early morning of the time change. Runners wear lights and often pajamas or other costumes. They run for 30-40 minutes. Because of the time change, runners finish the race before they began!
