The Camels of Riyadh

2010-04-26

Even though we think of the camel as something belonging to the past, they are still very much a part of Saudi modern life! I shot this photo in downtown Riyadh, a city of 6 million.

The Saudis love their camels. One student of mine owns 100! For many they are a status symbol, with the white camel being the most prized. But they also use them for meat, and camel’s milk is supposed to be a special treat.

On the edge of town, by the airport, you can see the camel souk, where hundreds of the beasts are offered for sale. And not far away is a special race track for camel races. Yes, the camel is alive and well in Saudi Arabia!
