Saturday school could be restarted in Japanese public schools

Article:

Saturday school could be restarted in Japanese public schools http://www.newsonjapan.com/html/newsdesk/article/104226.php

Questions:

1. Do you think Saturday school should be restarted?

2. Did you go to school on Saturdays when you were a child?

3. Do you think study and school are more important than spending time together as a family or having time to relax/play/do things other than study?

4. Do you think that this is the right way to use money from the education sector?

My thoughts on the article:

I am disappointed to hear that Japan might be restarting Saturday classes especially in elementary schools. I think that there is enough time in the school year for schools to teach everything they need to teach and Japan is already notorious for projects and homework over the holiday breaks. I also think that more money should be spent on developing better curriculums and helping teachers to become better teachers instead of focussing on more time in the classroom for students.

This is completely different to my upbringing in Australia and I feel a little sad for my children because I feel that Saturday classes wouldn`t leave them with much time to play and I think that play is also very important for development.

I think, if schools wanted to, having classes in junior high and high school on the weekends would be okay but I do not think these should be mandatory.
